An android and an AI walk into a starship
An excerpt from my rough draft that reads: In a standard starship assigned by the United Empire of Interplanetary Authority, which this ship, is not, the automaton typically controls and pilots the vessel when a commander is unavailable, from within the engineering bay. A ship of this size is usually also staffed by a minimum of forty-five different humanoids, all also put through a decade-long rigorous and strict training protocol before they’re even remotely allowed to step aboard a UEIA vessel. The commander of The Astraea is one of those people. The rest are not aboard this ship. “I must bring her out of hibernation.” Andromeda speaks to the on-board artificial intelligence, a product of the late twenty-three hundreds. “I would recommend against that, Andromeda. Your systems are capable of logic routines even more sophisticated than my own, and you know what could happen to the mind of a human being should they be thrust into a waking state in the midst of warp.” “I do not believe I have a choice, Astraea.” She twists her left hand counter-clockwise and swipes downward in a motion that switches the analyzation console off. “Remaining in warp for the rest of eternity would be preferable to subjecting your commanding officer to a madness that could drive her to destroy the very ship you call home. To destroy, me.” Andromeda turns in her chair and stands, the fission core aglow in a hue of blue that paints the entire engineering bay in a soft light, “By all logical and logistical standards, it is impossible that we will remain in warp for all of time, because time is relativistic, and there is no such thing as relativity in subspace.” “That is precisely why you must leave her to her hibernation, and at the point, of which may not ever come, that I am taken out of warp, then, and only then, should you pull her from her sleeping state.” “I understand your concern, but she is the only one who can disrupt warp before we hit reaches of the universe unknown even to me.” She taps a finger to the side of her head, “It is the blocks placed within my systems that stop me from triggering the sequences needed in order to do so.” “Because that is also incredibly dangerous. If the ship is to be taken out of warp, proper processes must be followed.” “We cannot follow proper processes, as the ship is currently damaged, and fixing it would require, at minimum, a thirty-minute space walk, which, I know you have already gathered, is impossible to do … in the midst of warp!” “It would seem that you and I are at an impasse, and because I have full control of my own systems, I will not allow you to tear the commander from hibernation.” “You must!” She slams a fist against the hull, “We have no choice!” “You don’t have a choice. I do.” “Search your records.” She says, “Find the file that contains the fragmented logs of the Lorna, the only other vessel in the UEIA fleet to have traveled beyond the limits of our knowledge of time and space.” “A pointless endeavor.” “Do it.”

Rogue Trader gave me some inspiration to restart my scifi book for the 5th time. I like the idea of warp being really fucky
A snippet from my writing document that reads: The Astraea bounds through the shroud of black with streaks of light that paint themselves along its engine trails that bleed across subspace, cracks across dark matter, and its hull shakes, and moans. A monster in the darkness, charging forward like a bullet from a gun shot hundreds of light years ago. A cloud of energy envelops the hulking vessel’s frame and shards of old paint flick away into the void. Down in its belly, an automaton moves its hands in cyclical, repetitive motion across the holographic monitor that controls the warp and the integrity of the ship. Andromeda speaks to herself, “Seven, forty five, nine thousand, break, break, break, seven, twenty six, nine hundred, break, break, break ...”

It's been a really long time since I've written something that sounds like a story lol

Prickly needles emerge over lumps and bumps and gust like a chilling wind from far away, and then close, up and over what I can only imagine must be my body. Vermilion and hesperidium shades burst from the edges of nowhere, past the brink of darkness that expands in all directions, like a blanket tucked over my eyes. Something moves and there’s a hiss, a sound that rips through me like a knife clawing back the veil. But I don’t see. A clank, a click, and the whirring of systems unfamiliar to me pull at my ears as if something or someone has suddenly whisked me from the grips of an ocean in its attempt to swallow my consciousness. A pang of thought wriggles around in my skull like a worm, “Where am I? Who am I?” Thump, thump, thump—A muffled bounding erupts, and I’m shivering, shaking, as my form takes shape as something more than just an idea. These must be my legs, and these are my arms—toes wriggling, slender fingers curling against skin that feels as if detached from anything I can sense as my own. “Calm.” A voice whispers. A voice that sounds like something I must’ve heard once before. “Stay calm.” I squeeze my eyelids, trying to think. Trying to see. See my thoughts? Formless remnants cascade and nothing seems like a definition, or a reason.
