Yes I loved Melancholy too, especially the second part: it’s so humane (and holy).

Have you read anything else of his? I would definitely recommend Aliss by the Fire, also Morning and Evening, and I think Septology is amazing - it really deserves the hype!

Yes, I really liked it too! I’ll admit I wasn’t enjoying it quite as much as some of his other books - but then the ending really threw me off balance, and now the rhythm of the three sections has really grown on me. (I love his writing, and I think the translation is brilliant too!)

I was reading this yesterday, too! What did you think of it?

"I am a hater, and I will not be polite. The machine is disgusting and we should break it. The people who build it are vapid shit-eating cannibals glorifying ignorance. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself." 🔥🔥

I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

"What is life but what we choose, who we know, what we experience? Incoherent empty men want to sell me the chance to stop reading and writing and thinking, to stop caring for my kids or talking to my parents, to stop choosing what I do or knowing why I do it"

"The makers of AI [...] want to build a genie to grant them wishes, and their wish is that nobody ever has to make art again. They want to create a new kind of mind, so they can force it into mindless servitude."

Yes, absolutely! I was just wondering how to put this into words! No, haven’t read Zone, but I’ll definitely get a copy.

Just finished: I loved it!

Must read piece by Noah McCormack with too many quotaboe lines to select one! thebaffler.com/salvos/we-us...

I remember reading somewhere (an old S&S?) that those films (especially Stromboli?) feel like documentaries about Bergman -- she's so palpably pulled around by the way that the styles of the movies shift around her, and such a brave, great actor that she registers and performs that discomfort.

No, not pejorative at all! (I find it unbearable but certainly not unwatchable!) Completely agree that it gets a lot of its weird effect from that mixture of naturalistic/heightened styles, and the weird stresses and strains that this places on IB as a performer. It's an astonishing film!

Absolutely love this film! You’re right about the melodrama, but at times I find it almost unbearable. That ending!!

I can't recommend it too highly!
