does this also pertain to optional dialogue as well? like, does giving the player the choice to engage with entirely superfluous interactions for the sake of optional character building moments or worldbuilding also rub you the wrong way in that sense? ie, would you rather it were just required?

But it is an enormous shame. I always did my best to dissuade that kind of behaviour while I was active in the community, but it generally tends to amount to nothing when the "elders" of the community are very stuffy and unwilling to change the space they help to foster.

It is what it is. Insular, hyperspecific communities tend to get that way.
