Quite a bit. He was a frigate captain during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (and at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_of_30_May_1781), later commanded a 3rd rate during the first non-VOC expedition to the Dutch East-Indies, for instance.
