The same for journalists. If a politician or business leader spits out 1.5C or net zero, ask them how fast emissions need to drop to reach net zero in 2050, and how fast they are dropping today. Point out the contradiction. Make them explain it.

6/6 +++ Figure is from Prof. Eliot Jacobson, whose data-driven visualisations set a high standard for clarity, transparency, and public communication of climate indicators.+++

5/ So as you enter the second week of COP30 negotiations, please look again at the the new record. The only metric that matters has just reached its worst value on record.

Act accordingly.

4/irreversible tipping points.Every year of delay ensures that the task becomes more brutal, more disruptive, & more expensive.

History records many societal collapses.
But if we continue down this path, we will be the first civilisation to collapse with full scientific knowledge of exactly why.

3/ But physics is not impressed by our results and with our choice of a founding spirit of essentially “let’s all try, and hope the others do more.”

The CO2 record is the planet’s way of reminding us that hope is not a mitigation strategy. Every tenth of a degree is now carrying us closer to

2/ The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration data* is just the empirical confirmation of what many of us already know: we have mistaken process for progress.

After a decade of the Paris Agreement, we cling to a comforting fiction: that we are now entering an “implementation phase.”

1/ - Previous record (Feb 2019): 7.826 ppm per 36 months
- New record (Oct 2025): 7.874 ppm per 36 months

Let’s be brutally clear about what this means. Despite ten years of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) the rate at which we are accelerating the planetary crisis has never been higher.

kicked in instantly: cover up the problem. Literally. A stagehand rushed to pull a curtain over the fallen bot and even that failed. The perfect cover-up that couldn’t cover up.

It’s not every day you see a machine achieve state-level realism.

To be fair, no one in the world of AI has ever come so close to mimicking a drunk Russian leaving the pub at 3 a.m. The stagger, the collapse, the glorious absence of balance, sheer authenticity!

And, of course, Russian reflexes

4/4 And if the ‘Guardian Effect’ supposedly “killed the voluntary carbon market ,” I do wonder what this kind of ‘FT Effect’ does to Paris Agreement and Article 6 understanding.

UN Carbon Trading Confusion - or Financial Times Confusion?

3/ Article 6 is a voluntary cooperation clause inside a treaty built on domestic aspirations.

Until we admit that, headlines like “UN carbon trading confusion” will keep confusing readers, while the real work of raising and implementing ambition remains unfinished.

2/ and in doing so, perfectly illustrates how careless reporting can blur, rather than clarify, the structural flaws of the Paris Agreement.

Let’s be clear: it’s not “accounting confusion” that holds back Article 6. It’s the design of the Paris Agreement itself.

💡 The uncomfortable truth:

6/6 🏛️ If Europe wants credibility, home and away (including at COP30), the European Parliament must reject this part of the Council’s compromise proposal to amend the Climate Law (Regulation (EU) 2021/1119).

5/ Land-based carbon sinks are not a substitute for deep emission cuts. Nature cannot - and would not - mop up our fossil excess.

Just like the 5% of the 2036-2040 target’s use of international carbon credits disguised as “flexibility,” relying on land sinks with wishful thinking is not integrity.

4/ 🔥 We’re betting our future on a system already eroding under climate change supercharged droughts, wildfires, and flawed land-use policies that also miss supporting co-benefits like biodiversity protections.

💬 But nature cannot and will not fix our fossil problem.
