⚠️ All the "Sharrows" remaining in Toronto

The vast majority were created before 2020 - and the ones since are almost all outside of the downtown

In most cases, they indicate failure.
Either a street's design is calm enough for mixed road users without reminder, or vulnerable users need protection

Building a tool that turns questions into maps

Called the Geospatial Fact Finder (or Geoff, for short), it turns natural language, like "Which bike lanes are not sharrows?" into spatial results to help planners, activists, & more.

I'm curious: What would you ask Geoff?

🗺️Toronto bike hack:

If you need to go north/south downtown, use Huron St.

Its got alternating one ways so there are rarely cars. It has lights at major intersections, connects to lanes on Peter St and goes to Bloor

Feels much safer/ more comfy than the official route one block over on Beverly

I don’t understand why Doug Ford doesn’t just say “I’ve done all I can to remove the bike lanes and prevent future ones”

He’s won all the political points he can on this issue. No suburban voters care enough to check.

Why waste more time and money besides pettiness?

🌳🏙️ Impervious surfaces impact of flooding & extreme heat - but surfaces change each year and mapping them manually is time consuming

I've been training an ML model to make maps automatically based on aerial imagery

Here's the best result so far -

🚶 "Outdoor-Commute" (walk, cycle, transit) should be an important metric in discussions about city planning

The 81% of people in Yonge-Bay who commute outside every day have different needs than the 17% in Princess-Rosethorn

They have different vulnerabilities to heat, snow, rain, ice, etc

It's hard to think about when it's -10°C in Toronto, but our summers keep getting hotter.

But some neighbourhoods get hotter than others due to the Urban Heat Island Effect.

How hot is your neighbourhood?

Here are all the Toronto Bike Share stations within a 5 min walk of the bike lanes the Ontario government is removing.

More than 9,000 bike share trips used these lanes each day in 2024. More than 3,000 trips just during rush hour.

Welcome! Climacity is where I will be posting geospatial stories about my areas of interest: urbanism, transportation and climate.

I am a product manager and computer engineer by background, currently trying to apply those skills while learning foundational geospatial analysis. Cheers!
