It's really well recieved among people that sincerly like giant robots because it's very earnest and converse nicely with Gundam in general, but some people want their war drama spectacle while Gundam X is kinda wholesome so they don't really mesh with it.

Not like knowing how to animate giant robots is going to get you paid either.
Giant robots might very well be dead in ten years, mostly because japanese animation industry is too fucked for the specific expertise they require to be passed down to new animators.

Not expensive, the people that can actually make it are just too scarce. When aniplex and their limitless Sony funds tried to make DarliFra, they had to subcontract Trigger for that because there's just nobody else to do it at all, no matter how much money you got.

This what lead to having people laughing at the "ah ah Sasuke head is weird" picture for years only to look back years after to realize it was a still in a actually great looking action piece by an animation legend.

Saying that while City is broadcasting is kinda wild, not gonna lie.
Those "every other anime look bad" takedown were never good opinions and talking about One Piece should be hint since it was actually the main laughing stock for most of it existence.

Sorry for the wall of text jumpscare, nerd stuff gotta be nerdy.

You can try Flip Flappers (2016) or Wonder Egg Priority (2021), both have tried to do stuff with varied degrees of success. Magilumiere (still publishing in jump+) is the most interesting modern take on magical girl right now because it was made with people that grew up watching Precure in mind.

Sorry for not mentioning any recent, magical girl actually kinda doesn't exist actually, currently it's all Madoka clones and Precure. They didn't translate well into the 2010s because idols took over and their optimism had already popped with the economic bubble, so this all faded away.

If you want to get a bit away from show for kids, at least you should try stuff like Princess Tutu (2002), Mahou Shoujou Tai Arusu (2005) or just the Cardcaptor Sakura adaptation (1998), it's hard to process how little that show aged in term of animation.

Main issue with any of those is they are show for kids before being show for girls, it's all very episodic and that's make them hard to watch by today standard, especially hard to binge, that's I'm not mentioning Sailor Moon : it's good, but very long and hard to watch.

Ojamajo Doremi (1999) is probably the best magical girl show out there, it's somewhat forgotten because... I don't know ? It's fun and cute, you can still probably show that to any kid in 2025 and they'll remember it for life.

If you want to skip to old stuff you can either watch Fancy Lala (1998) or Full Moon wo Sagashite (2002), the both kinda short (Fancy Lala is 26 episode) and are closer to what magical girl was about at first, so more early idol stuff than fighting monsters. Full Moon is pretty sad though.

Breaking lurk to no let Magical Girl ignorance spreading.
Easiest answer is Precure, you can watch the first Precure all star movie to get the vibes of the fanchise in a short time but watching one of the actual serie is : Heartcatch (2007) > Smile (2009) = Go Princess (2015) > Futari wa (2003)
