Is there a formula or heuristic for finding two colors in RGB that when placed on top of one another with a slight transparency applied to each will create another color that is distinguishable from the two and not muddy looking? #colortheory #design #color

Having fun playing with color gradients using a color palette from a project I'm working on. The three middle ones use HCL color interpolation to move around the color wheel rather than across it to avoid greys and bands, a good trick to know about when making gradients.

Animating Coronavirus cumulative daily case counts in the U.S. using @observablehq, @d3js_org, and data from the @nytimes.
I'm honestly impressed with how much simpler & efficient it is to make this type of map using Observable notebooks.

Long bike ride over the Richmond Bridge today. We had one hell of a head wind on the way back to the East Bay. Really glad the pilot program for this was put into effect, it’s such a beautiful ride.

The manual cartography techniques, like using water color, by Molly O’Halloran are so beautiful and eloquently and masterfully implemented. Watching her make these maps and explain the process is magical and a real treat

I think this might take the cake as one of the best uses of a bar chart of all time, showing #POTUS45’s decade of losses plunging into the depths of negative hundreds of millions of dollars. Really speaks to the power of #datavis

The anti separated bike lane sentiment is apparently really strong from some upscale business owners in Oakland’s Temescal. TBH I’m not sure blaming cycling infrastructure is going to solve the increase in car use in post-gentrified urban areas
