That's true with hindsight but was not at all clear to people at the time! (Also it was impossible to bring YOUR Pokemon from the previous games into the new ones - I can only imagine how people would react to that now)

I remember a lot of griping about Gen 3 removing features and not letting you catch every Pokemon (which made it very funny when those exact complaints rolled back around for the Switch era games)

Honestly I don't understand why Sonic fans don't want MORE division between Modern/Classic - the overlap between what people like about the two styles is so minimal, it's hard to imagine any game satisfying fans of both without splitting the difference
