But a public good failing to stay afloat while public money is stripped away is not an indictment of its function. The framing is faulty. That’s not what it was built to do.

In the attacks against structures of public good - public education, public libraries, public radio - the (most charitable version of the) argument seems to be: if a service is worthy of public dollars, it will be able to earn private dollars; if it can’t, too bad! Should’ve been a better business!

Water- and land-use feelings about golf courses aside, I’ve been thinking a lot about how easily he framed his answer. He immediately affirmed the value of a public good as totally separate from its ability to profit. No hemming and hawing over it. They’re unrelated!
