Thinking back to this peachy pink sunrise I caught in the Sierras back in October. One of my favorite spots in the world!

A winter storm passes over the Great Salt Lake.

These strange rocks are formed from the activity of microbes living in this harsh and unforgiving saline lake. I'm always struck by how dead and desolate it looks, but still somehow teeming with life under the surface.

Lichenscape #1

Starting a series I have wanted to do for a long time based on my personal fascination with lichen as a biologist.

These lichen displayed interesting growth rings and I was taken with the subtle variation in colors and texture.

Midnight moonlight at the racetrack. Caught this rock in the middle of a long journey from home across this famous dried up lake bed.

Patterns and textures of desert badlands viewed from above.

If a person was in this photo, they would be just a small dot in this alien landscape.

Who likes lichen?

I was out trying to photograph the Great Salt Lake at Antelope Island but the conditions were dull and grey. Instead I started to look down and focus on these super cool rocks and mini lichen forests. Time to buy a macro lens?

Another view from the shores of the Great Salt Lake.

Feeling inspired by all the creative photographers I have found on here and their amazing images. I am striving to try new things with the camera this year and get out of my comfort zone.

Good morning and happy new year everyone!

I hope 2025 brings you good things, like this sunrise high up in the eastern Sierra.

Fabric-like shapes, folds, and textures of the giant Eureka Dunes in Death Valley.

This sunrise brought just a little bit of warmth after camping out in single-digit temperatures in the winter.

Here’s a video my wife took last time we were out there that shows off the hellscape part.

One goal this winter is to photograph the endangered Great Salt Lake. It can be challenging to capture, as it can go from hauntingly beautiful to depressing hellscape depending on where you point the camera.

I found these flooded mud flats last night after winter storm.

The best part of any canyon hike is reaching the narrows. This was from an amazing 40 mile trek spanning the border of Utah and Arizona with my wife taking the lead.

I love taking landscape photos with my telephoto lens. In this case, a group of pines standing sentinel high up in the Yosemite valley.

A bit of a more subtle scene, but if you look closely in the background, this is technically a waterfall pic.

I'm late to the waterfall party on here, but here is one from California's Trinity Alps Wilderness. This river was raging with spring runoff and I couldn't keep my lens dry for the life of me.

Something a bit different for #topdowntuesday. The shores of Utah's Great Salt Lake are an alien landscape of constantly shifting sands and sediments.

This is an aerial view of the patterns made by a small tributary accentuated by evening light.

This was an unforgettable sunset in the Mojave desert. Even the rocks and plants were glowing fiery pink reflected from the sky.

At the time, I correctly determined this picture was unusable, shot at ISO 3200, due to very nasty noise. Cut to 2024, and I was pleasantly surprised when trying out some of the new noise-reduction algorithms at how this image could be salvaged. Check out the original here.

Pristine skies in the eastern Sierra. Taken during one of many backpacking trips I've done to this same alpine lake. Truly a special spot to watch the world spin from 🌌🏕️.

I'm endlessly fascinated by the patterns and textures of the desert. In this case, cracking and drying mud in a remote Utah canyon. Even mud can be beautiful.
