I studied Marguerite de Navarre in French for finals, but I don't remember any other female authors. Like you say, we didn't question it.

Absolutely agree. I've been working on some GCSE materials, and it's astounding which words aren't in the lists. We will more than likely face a similar situation when we get the minimum core content lists for KS2.
