I like to talk to people of all political persuasions. Work in a university in Scotland.
Is it possible that our political system is too centralised?

Another part of the problem is that they were almost certainly considered to be oddballs when they were younger, and have somehow ended up in charge of the world, so they do feel vindicated in whatever revenge they are trying to take on the rest of us, justified or not.

Exactly this

The only Tarantino film I have truly enjoyed

Man obsessed with masculinity can't quite understand other man's subtle performance and why this might be the best approach opposite a roaring DDL

A graduate tax, but apply it to all graduates

Throw in a bit of the history of science and I'm with you

You have to do it or the world economy will collapse

I mean they weren't wrong with the first part, just that it's completely bonkers as a system and not at all within most people's scope of interest.

I saw someone here explaining, quite earnestly, that anonymous briefing is 'how it works' and the public should really understand this.

Had a go at teaching a while back, having worked in education for ages, and was hugely undermined by leadership not following the behaviour policy they had set out in case it gave the wrong impression to parents

Prepared to be wrong but there's an almost zero chance of Farage going after *actual Oxbridge* in a Trumpesque manner. The Russell Group are doing what they always do, which is ensuring their advantage vs everyone else.

50 years ago almost no women were involved though. Am presuming that's not the case in France atm

Good to have someone that at least understands the value of research. Now to convince the public.

I think you do also need a wider vision of the country you're trying to govern. This doesn't has to come from philosophy (quite the reverse) but it does need to be rooted in something bigger than yourself.

Other disciplines are available

Didn't mean to jump on your comments to do that though! That's just where it went in my head

Completely fair. I'm probably one of the few people who isn't a tribal nationalist or a unionist but that whole debate being written out of the UK narrative, when it was so obviously a critique of policies which are now acknowledged to be disastrous, seems to be an oversight worth pointing out

In an extremely tough competition for Who To Blame Most for Everything I still think those two win tbh. I also slightly struggle with the complete absence of 2014 from most political analysis but 🙅‍♂️
November 28, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Also just the sheer hubris after 2014. You don't need to be partisan about Indy to understand it was anti austerity and anti Old Etonians with a superiority complex. They just banked it and went 'yes of course we can do this to the whole UK, obviously'

Going somewhat out on a limb to suggest that the government aren't our contractors though. Whatever we end up with is ultimately a shared responsibility.
