This knowledge that I can do something to make a difference feels powerful. That instead of watching the news in horror and feeling there is nothing I can do, I can make a difference even if it’s on a small scale and in my local community.

in the conversations and connections we have with our friends, families, neighbours and community. In the way we treat other people, work to make sure everyone knows they belong here as part of us, everyone is valued and loved.

Are we leaving peace building to other people because it feels like something that’s too big, and happens elsewhere?
Are we aiming for peace as an absence of violence (which feels big enough) or are we also aiming for a peace that incorporates the presence of social justice,

An attack full of horror and grief, magnified by the fact that it took place on the most holy of days for our Jewish community.
These two things, and some conversations with other Oasis church leaders, means I’ve been reflecting on what peace means.

It enabled us to have good conversations about how we feel about other flags too.
And then I saw the news on Thursday about the attack outside Heaton Park Synagogue on Middleton Road in Manchester.

It was our way of responding to the way flags are being used elsewhere in a way that makes people feel they don’t belong.
It was such a joy- watching people from many different backgrounds joining together, talking, being creative, and spreading joy.

Such a beautiful yet brutal story of intertwining cultures, countries, histories- less a clash of civilisations and more blending, boundary blurring. Makes virtues of Doubt, Hope, love, curiosity. Reminds us to learn from history & from each other.
