Hi I’m Claire. I help clinicians integrate strength & conditioning principles into their rehab practice

I’m also passionate about rehab for knee OA & co-founded the Joint Approach programme
Great paper by Bettariga et al on periodisation & how we might use this concept to best design exercise strategies alongside cancer treatments 👌🏼

Strength & Conditioning principles are helpful for all types of populations, not just athletes

RFD vs Strength
I thought it was time to revisit this topic after yesterday’s publication.

👉🏼What these performance qualities are
👉🏼How they differ
👉🏼How to think about focussing rehab/training

This is disappointing 🤨

RFD / RTD is not muscle strength. They are separate qualities of muscle performance

Had an absolute blast of a day with these awesome physios filming hip strength testing using #dynamometry, exploring what’s possible, repeatable & can be standardised in clinic just using a plinth.

Some tension & compression dynamometer options.

All videos feature in my course

Efficacy vs. effectiveness … do you know the difference?

Great BJSM Pod with Prof Daniel Lieberman & Chris Macdonald discussing the topic (& their recent review) with ref to exercise & Type II diabetes

Not any more for some surgeons following an excellent Keynote by Serena Simmons @serenapsychologist.bsky.social at the Munich ICRS CartilageRepair conference
YES 👊🏻

I’m often asked which dynamometer to buy & about testing in rehab.
1st response -what data do you want to obtain?
2nd- why do you want it?

Do you want to use data in decision making, or as a motivational aid?

Answer this THEN we can consider which tool 👍🏻

A muscle’s contractile history influences its subsequent performance.

Doesn’t always have to be negative. We can use potentiating mechanisms in clinical practice to overcome inhibition, or augment RFD & Power-based rehab👍🏻

These types of statements, in published papers really really annoy me 😡

Reader led to believe that break tests are associated with ⬆️ risks of injuries & these papers evidence it

They don’t !

‘Throw away’ statements like this can have a profound impact. Authors & reviewers please do better

I teamed up with foot & ankle specialist @lizbayleyphysio.bsky.social to created 4 exercise programmes for Plantar Heel Pain. 3 are based on Osborne et al. (2023) where 18 experts devised exercises for PHP. The ‘LiTHE’ programme is our own creation which fits more closely with S&C principles…

Here another
Physio Kinvent Pull dynamometer. What’s the sampling frequency?

1️⃣ 40 Hz
2️⃣ 125 Hz
3️⃣ 1000 Hz

Question for you…
What’s the sampling frequency of the Lafayette HHD - used in many research papers ?

Sampling frequency = number of data points obtained obtained per second

1️⃣ 40Hz
2️⃣ 125 Hz
3️⃣ 1000Hz

(See if you can avoid looking it up 😉)
