While the person who originally wanted to continue to be friends with them has had their relationship so degraded by avoiding this constant negativity from the other party that it leaves the door wide open for them to step in. Convenient, right?

Particularly egregious: talking incredibly negatively to your partner or friend about people in their lives to the point it affects them being able to interact with those people---only to run to them after you've broken up or fallen out.
