We exploited machine learning and meta-analysis approaches to characterize the association of the gut microbes with CRC.

The gut microbiome signature is characterized by peculiar species which are very unlikely inhabitants of the healthy gut!

We leveraged >3,700 fecal samples derived from healthy, adenoma and CRC individuals and sequenced with shotgun metagenomics.

We conducted an exploratory analysis of 9,251 publicly available human metagenomes from 31 countries & 48 cohorts that we previously published,

and discovered a significant presence of human mtDNA sequences
plus investigated the extent of mtDNA presence.
