in NYC, subway is the best mode of transit to go far distance. that can keep collecting the fare. however, buses are often slow, so people don't take them unless they have to. the thing is most people who take the bus ends up taking the subway anyway, so the loss of fare isn't really significant.

society progresses when people move around more and spend more time and money outside. for many in the city, that link is the bus. by making buses fast and free, it's incentivizing people to move. in turn, those people will make more purchases elsewhere.
