Scaife's son George died aged 17 years as a result of a workplace accident. Employed as a mechanic at John Crossley & Sons, Deanclough. He was seriouly injured to the thigh & abdomen as he was picking some waste off a planing machine. He was taken to the Infirmary where he died the next day.
