These chemicals are nasty. 2,4-D is an ingredient in Agent Orange. Mass pesticide use is part of why Iowa has some of the country's highest cancer rates. I hope this longform feature plays a small role in getting more people to see the destruction all around us.

Now, a movement is growing to change state laws on herbicide use. Drift doesn't obey state boundaries, so it really needs a federal solution. But the Trump administration's rollbacks of pesticide rules and firings at the EPA have sent things the wrong direction.

Way back in February, I'd started seeing yard signs across rural Illinois put up by the nonprofit Prairie Rivers Network trying to raise awareness. In the absence of any statewide herbicide monitoring program, PRN had started collecting data on their own, sending leaves off to labs for analysis.

This is especially cool to me because I'm a child of the ISS era. My parents grew up with the Apollo Program and the space race. I grew up with this vision of astronauts from all nations living and working together for the benefit of humanity. The first components launched the year I was born.

This is only the second time I've been asked to write a review, but I'd love to do more! Getting paid (not much) is a nice bonus when I was going to read the book either way.
