Rabid nerd, seeker of knowledge and understanding, probably a little too opinionated in my opinion, work in sustainability, let's talk about biomimicry and bio-inspired design...and ancient humans...and urban design...also behavioral economics... Oh, and q
More accurately, I can demonstrate a tortoise can't fly, first by defining what flight is, and then by showing a tortoise can't do it.
So, define consciousness, and then tell me how a particular architecture does not allow that.

Can this scientist identify things that are conscious and things that are not and then describe the difference in architecture that allows this?
Even simpler, can any scientist describe the architecture of human consciousness?

Excellent point re: click bait headlines contradicting the content.
"LLMs architecturally incapable of consciousness" implies this scientist knows the architecture that would allow consciousness. If that is true it would be one of the most significant scientific achievements of the century.

Also, see "the hard problem of consciousness". As well as the fact that there still exists active, valid debate over how to define and describe consciousness.

To be clear, I'm not saying GPT is conscious, just that it's not as easy as "No!".

1st: Agree, low quality article and poor examples.
That said, such a definitive "no" is also low effort. First, define what consciousness is. Second, show how GPT does not meet that definition.
Anything less than that is like arguing over who the best QB of all time is. 100% opinion.

Slight correction: Energy storage, not just batteries. Pumped hydro is currently the most commonly used (by MW of storage) form of energy storage in the US and globally. Batteries are on track to replace it, but it's still there and very common.

Talk to them. It's not just the politicians. There are still millions and millions who think this is better.

And so we must accept we are the minority. We who believe in rule of law, true liberty, & rational thought, are the outliers.

A nation is not a static entity, it is what its people say it is. In November 2024 150 million Americans stated they either wanted this or could care less. The America we fought for is not the one 150 million Americans want now.

It's never been about immigration. This has been said by people way smarter than me. This is about desensitizing the public and shattering boundaries. ICE raids today, national security raids tomorrow for "terrorists".
Good luck everyone!

Second this question. Especially in areas without M. structor populations.

I couldn't even watch the whole thing. It made me sick.

Excellent commentary by Matt Ferrell last week. I couldn't agree more with his conclusions. Fast forward 4 years, we are going to be so far behind in RE tech and experience we will be buyers not leaders or innovators.

National emergencies. Natural disasters. Defense. They put their lives on pause and serve. They miss classes, lose time at work, are absent for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
Now they are forced to make this sacrifice so governors can provide tribute to their autocrat.

I was an Illinois National Guard soldier in the 90s. Let's take a moment to remember who they are. They are students (classes start this week), parents, mechanics, plumbers, etc. They sign up knowing that when it hits the fan, they will set aside their daily lives to help their states and America.

Yes and...
We need massive constitutional reform. The original document tried to restrict and rein in the power any 1 person could have. Successive generations of American voters could not handle that responsibility. Now it needs to be baked in, immutable in the very structure of government.

Thank you Seth for continuing to highlight this insanity.
It's sad to see this wave of zealotry and pseudoscience run through the US. Then again, you and others, going back to Asimov and Sagan, have been ringing the warning bell.

I don't doubt Taco would do this, but the only thing I could find were announcements from March and April that Vance would be scrubbing "improper ideology".
