Oh hah, if you make the astro degree more rigorous in terms of phys courses than the phys degree is, the physicists will absolutely lose their shit. That will rock their world view irreparabley...

No. The chief problem is, AI is literally A TOOL FOR UNLEARNING. The more you use it, the worse you get at whatever it is you’re using it for. It’s the opposite of educating, it’s uneducating. 2/2

you should never listen to us old guys.

Right, if you do our BS or BA degrees, there's so much physics that all you need to do is add one course (Junior phys lab) and you've completed the Physics BA as well. So nearly all our students are doing some form of a double Astro/Phys major.

Oh and if it helps, here are our Astro BS requirements:

and also (as you know!) we require a semester of thermo/statmech (*definitely* recommend that!), a semester of classical mech, and two semesters of E&M for the BS (one for the BA). Plus all the upper level astro, of course....

I think, yeah, QM is important. I mean *I* dont use it much, but if my research area was compact objects or stellar physics, for example, I sure would. And so not having a course in QM for an undergrad astro degree would seem to be a gap. We require 2 semesters of it for the BS, one for the BA.

It's truly awful that you had to deal with this, Yvette. From our spot in Astro we didn't see what was going on over in Phys, but that's on us and we should have been more aware.

He never missed an election. Not a general, not a primary, not a special. Not a damn one. If there was a vote for dogcatcher, he showed up to vote for a dogcatcher. He cherished his right to vote and he used it. Oh did he use it. We should all do the same.

Had a discussion in class with my majors today about how being a good scientist meant not only being scientifically focused and careful, but also communicating well and not being an insufferable asshole. That last one is an aspect of "professional" that a lot of scientists seem to fail at....
