Lowell has a large and active public program. My point is that in what is obviously a difficult time, they’re deciding to cut the budget for research astronomers, whose work is at least part of the reason people visit, and was why the institution was established in the first place.

Upper class is about family. Diarist Alan Clark sneered at someone who ‘bought their own furniture’. You can be upper class and have no money, and earn a shedload and not be upper class. Meanwhile a load of people in middle class jobs think they’re working class…

The best is Kate Fox’s book ‘Watching the English’. I think she introduces the gnome theory - lower class: ‘look at my garden gnome’. Upper class: ‘I have amassed a world leading collection of gnomes, let me tell you about them’. Middle class: ‘I have a gnome, ironically, isn’t it funny’

I have been telling people visiting the tennis club to P&R instead of trying to drive to Merton Street for years. This weekend, because of the charge, some of them actually did.
