the wild part is all of the cognitive dissonance. "Sure he believes he has ultimate, unlimited power, but that's just how drunks talk." This is the battered-wife syndrome Marjorie Taylor Greene was talking about. "He doesn't DO retribution, except for those few times he did."

City estimated it at 8.48m in 2024 (down from 8.8m in 20)

8.8 seems high? I feel like it was around 8.4 at the last census and has held steady. But density is also a thing. London might have a smaller geographic footprint.

Paul Dano deserves a better career than he's had and it is a crime of Hollywood that he didn't get it. PS you've heard the story of how he got the Paul (?) Sunday role, right?

I've seen Netflix shows with worse lighting

Trump is super German and his family taught him the only absolute is power. He never experienced paternal love. So he's accumulated power to impress his dead father who never loved him. It's somehow not more complicated than that

yeah and the rest of read Hugo at some point (or Dickens or)

she's gonna sell a lot more of those dumb t-shirts though

I don't think anyone has a realistic shot in TX and Allred was like "man I don't want an expensive bruising primary for a race I'll inevitably lose"
December 8, 2025 at 8:29 PM
when the arrest first happened I didn't get the appeal but like what the fuck
December 8, 2025 at 6:38 PM
yeah it's neither. It's a real thing Matt Weiner said to one of his writers earlier in the week when they were desperately seeking his approval. By the time they shot the scene he'd forgotten he said it.

I wanted to point that out but being pedantic about one thing seems to excuse all of the other sins here

I think Shape of Water specifically is an ode to that era of filmmaking. Frankenstein has a lot of wide-open vistas.
December 8, 2025 at 5:40 PM
conversely, Spielberg switched DPs and I really hate the shtick Kaminski has. Chris Nolan also changed DPs and you can tell how much he sets the visual tone by how seamless it was
December 8, 2025 at 4:50 PM
In Frankenstein I was curious where they shot because so much of it *felt* practical. I think you can argue there's a sort of heightened sense to it, but del Toro makes fairy tales, even if they're robots punching monsters. It doesn't bother me

that is violent language Becky
December 8, 2025 at 4:35 PM
wasn't this also like the last 100 years of Rome?

I give him some limited credit for the work in Gaza, but most of these were 2 week skirmishes, not capital-w Wars. Meanwhile Hegseth is inching very close to the War Crimes thing against (at worst) drug runners in the Caribbean.

I remember people cared a LOT when they gave Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy a 10/10, but that was almost 2 decades ago now

I just checked and I think this is more Pitchfork sprinting to the fringiest possible take they could find

one final note, the song really glosses over finding a silk hat with the POWER TO CREATE LIFE. Where else has this hat been? What else was it used for? Who created the hat?
December 4, 2025 at 1:18 PM
brb writing an existential Christmas movie that ponders the futility of life...will Hallmark be down for a slightly different tone
December 4, 2025 at 1:06 PM
I think it's a meditation on the frailty of existence and the inevitability of destruction. Basically a Robert Frost poem with a catchier jingle. And if you knew you were going to die wouldn't you also live without consequences?
December 4, 2025 at 1:06 PM
no but American cities really like our alleyways for putting trash in
December 3, 2025 at 11:41 PM
dropping out when you're polling at 7% is not exactly "stepping down"
