maybe cut them a break, or maybe volunteer to read the huge volume of poems that arrive in journals - or even begin one and experience it?

I am not great at maths, but I have run a website and it was only me. I burnt out. I am assuming that some mags/journals have more than one editor, reader, website manager /printer etc. But, I also know that many journals are unsupported and are giving their time voluntarily.

Sometimes you have to let it lie fallow (like a field). I don't think you can force it. I would just have a notebook and pencil handy on walks and jot down phrases, images, and symbols, or stories that come to mind. Saying that, the poetic and story imagination can be opposed. Write randomly.

The digital attention span has not helped. I still think that there are readers, & there are people who have no confidence in their own reading and they follow the market.

The lack of confidence and discernment in their own reading habits is sad for some readers.

final thought: I think poetry establishments push the bright, mostly young, mostly well-off middle-class student because they have no confidence in their own reading. I really do. Poetry feels manufactured. Ultimately readers will just go elsewhere.

& not a psychological assault, unasked for and undesired.

I don't actually like being blinded by the brilliance of the MFA.
1. there is no space around the poem for the reader.
2. Sometimes the poet's voice is too noisy, too wanton in their own cleverness.
3. They are hot-housed.
4. They are turgid with symbolism.

em, poetry is a reader's art. 1/

That's right. I still get them, and academic requests and all sorts of stuff. No-one ever offers to pay , but are willing to take my precious time. Chuck em all. People have to learn to respect other people's time.
