Days of dreary weather took a sunny turn just in time for the 2nd annual Midwest Economics of Education Conference—excited to welcome everyone soon!

Crashed their writing workshop (during the lunch break!) to say hello to two of my academic idols, @mirya.bsky.social and @cwolbrecht.bsky.social! We should have gotten a picture, but I did come away with some #MHAWS swag.

Forever grateful for their examples of lifting while climbing.

Had a great time at the inaugural MidSouth Ed Policy Conference, organized by @rajdarolia.bsky.social, @mikekofoed.bsky.social, and @riacton.bsky.social and truly pulled off by the amazing Emily Wilcox Walls, in my beautiful hometown, Lexington.

Sun coming up on a beautiful day in New Orleans (and Winston Churchill), where I’m lucky enough to find myself for the third time this year — this time to discuss the economics of the child care market with state leaders. Excited to discuss policy solutions with those doing the hard work!

When the Boston and South Bend gates are next to each other at ATL… great to see @joshua-goodman.com on his way home from Georgia State on my way home from Duke!

The AEA released the committee's report on the 2023 climate survey and it's chock full of depressing stuff, but I couldn't help but notice this pull quote.

Posted here without further commentary. 👀

Question for BBN: I've never been to Duke before. Am I wearing these overalls, or should I just dress as The Wildcat?

Traveling to NBER SI via planes, trains, and automobiles today. First leg, South Shore to Chicago.

I imagine there are some people who don’t slip out of the hotel room at 6am to work on the 4th of July/family trip, and that sounds nice.

It's simply unacceptable what youth travel sports are willing to call "Chicago"

I usually follow the sage advice of not looking at teaching evals until right before the next iteration of the course, but this time, I decided to dive right in. My students, all PhD students this semester, really kept me going and I am thankful for them.

We should all listen to my super smart friend Kelly Hallberg, Scientific Director of the Inclusive Economy Lab @ UChicago, on the vital role that research and data infrastructure play in making good policy:

Our afterschool/evening/weekend hours are very chill.

This is just the family and personal calendars, work calendar hidden, but who has time for that anyway.

We also document likely channels to 2nd-gen effects: in addition to moms' own higher educational attainment (summarized in Bailey, Sun & Timpe's 2021 AER, Fig 5), evidence of ➕ parenting behaviors and early home environment and ⬆️ 2nd-gen preschool participation. www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=... 7/n

We find evidence of persistent Head Start effects to the children of those exposed: ⬆️ educational attainment and ⬇️ engagement in risky behaviors, effects large enough to close the 2nd-generation gap in long-term outcomes between individuals with more and less advantaged grandmothers. 6/n

Staffing reductions in HHS's Office of Head Start, closing of regional offices, and a leaked draft of the Administration's budget proposal suggests that the Project 2025 vision may be coming to fruition. Head Start had been supported and funded by R and D administrations and lawmakers for decades.

the legislative process and funded through the budget/appropriations process. An example is Head Start, the preschool program for children from low-income families, launched in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty. Project 2025 called for its elimination.
