I (Adam) very explicitly don't want people harassing you at all, I just wanted to cite the thing I was correcting. I would hope the very small number of people who read this newsletter aren't the kind of people who do that.

happened afterwards, we had to correct it, and then tell people why.
I hope this brings some kind of clarity on this at least. This project is exclusively meant to be a way to tell people about new & upcoming albums & shows & to promote cool things happening in the community. That's all we want.

-Also, speaking as me (Adam) for a sec - I really agree with Peter on the "don't like it, don't buy it" & the "if I didn't like an album, I didn't promote it" points! If part of this conversation happened before the newsletter went out, these albums wouldn't have even gone in. But since it...

-I would again like to just point out that rather than saying "THIS EXACT PERSON USED GENAI IN THEIR ALBUM AND FUCKING SUCKS," we just scrubbed it out and gave a reason for it. The only way folks will know who it was at any point in the future would have been if they looked outside the newsletter.

so that one's on me (Adam). We had some meaningful contributions from folks who have used other flavors of AI in the comment section of that post, and between those and a number of Peter's complaints about how AI and genAI are not the same thing, I agree we need to go back and edit for clarity.

That update points to this post which we released concurrently, which functionally says that we don't want to promote work made with generative AI. The terms "genAI" and "generated with AI" get used somewhat interchangeably - & you know, it looks like there's a nuance there I wasn't aware of...

provided their evidence that these albums were most likely created using genAI. At that point, we made the choice to pull those albums from the newsletter and update it with this statement - which notably does not include the name of the artist.

-At no point has this newsletter called anyone AI slop. What we did do was after being alerted that some albums were suspected of being created with genAI, we talked about how we felt about promoting content made that way. In the meantime, folks who know more abt spotting this than I (Adam) do...

-The people who write the newsletters are @iknowadamseats.bsky.social and @donutshoes.bsky.social. We might get tips about upcoming releases from other people, but at this time there are no other and have been no other writers for Chiptune Monthly. Do not attribute this newsletter to anyone else.

Now that we've had some time to get off work & confer & write things down, we've put out a quick statement, removed the albums from the October newsletter, and will be making sure that folks know when they submit their albums (which these were not, btw, we were tagged) that we won't promo AI "art."
