I'm sure this is a silly question, but is there any reason (other than making sure neither company has an advantage based on what turns out be circulating) why they can't decide to have Moderna target one variant like BA.2.86 and Pfizer target one like LP.8.1?
Seems like hedging bets would be good.

Struck by this being an "ominous sign for the economy" because "Earning a Ph.D. in economics has long been a reliable path to affluence and prestige. Not anymore."
Why was it a reliable path? Why weren't history jobs disappearing an ominous sign?
