That’s why sexual abuse is more about power than sex. It isn’t about just the perpetrator. It’s about whether the victim had a realistic chance to say no and/or ability to report with confidence that it would help and not lead to worse outcomes.

Not just wealth, any structure where people with power (money, fame, authority, etc) are favored over those without, and people are unwilling to challenge those in power and listen to and protect those without.

The synagogue in Florence is like this.

After that article, Bezmogis wrote a short story collection “Immigrant City”, and I love the title story. To me, it felt like a love letter to the immigrant communities of Toronto.

Fiber is good - but will folks be willing to eat actual food instead of powders or pills?

“A simple yes or no will suffice” is complete BS and unless you are literally under cross-examination, you don’t need to play along. It is designed to shortcut critical thinking, not exchange information or have productive discussion.

And demonstrating that maybe that kind of attention is a career blocker for women in academia.

Exactly! The fight against universal healthcare in the US was motivated by politics and entrenched interests, not inability to afford it. Countries with far less like Costs Rica have it, and Israel’s system developed even before statehood or US aid with its Histradut labor union.

And guilty not for things we actually do, but that “we’re done in our name”. It’s become a common line but I find it really problematic. I also live around lots of Iranians, Chinese and Russians-what would this guilt-by-ancestry mean for them?

I’m trying to figure out the same question. “Pick-me” maybe? But it seems like an attempt to deflect hatred by saying “WE are the Good Ones, THEY are the Bad Ones and you have our permission to hate them as long as that hate is never directed at us.”

Actual recipe in my family cookbook, because people did some awful things to food in the 1960s. Take the molded Jello salad abominations, make it Jewish by adding gefilte fish.

THIS. My great-grandparents fled pogroms and came to Canada in the 1900s when immigration was open. The door then slammed shut and kept out Jews fleeing Hitler, and Jewish immigration to Palestine spiked because they had nowhere else to go.

How are you defining secular song? Because there are popular songs that still reference God or someone’s religious background. Mattisyahu‘s One Day is clearly about moshiach, everything Leonard Cohen reflects Judaism plus some Buddhism, U2 are clearly Christian.

Adding that you should:
5. Focus on actual actions, laws, policies and leadership. These are all things that can be causing harm, and that can be changed.

6. Don’t start focusing on origins or engage in any argument that says people don’t exist or are imposters to be violently expelled.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas is the worst. Jews are being killed all along but the kids reading the book are only supposed to feel sad for the Nazi.

True for cooking/weekly meal prep too. Reality shows where there’s no plot to follow are my choice.

I’m in the middle of doing a whole review of this article, and it strikes me as being written from the POV of an American Jew who isn’t closely related to Holocaust survivors. Going to check if that’s the case.

Great, I can practice my French and once again need to remind everyone that antisemitism is a term invented by a Jew-hating German who based a conspiracy theory on pseudo-scientific racism. We don’t have lizard DNA, but conspiracy theories saying we do are still harmful.

YouTube is your friend. I’m not remotely handy, and it taught me how to do this and how to snake a toilet.

If you can use words like Holocaust to describe what’s happening in Gaza and settler colonialism to describe Israel, you get to condemn these things as a white European, North American or Australian without doing anything.

Please double-check is you qualify for Trillium Drug Benefit, and also talk to your doctor because they can often get your free samples or speak to a drug rep to get you access to meds you can’t afford. My husband often helps patients with this stuff.

Otherwise, I think it makes sense to promote methods that are largely idiot-proof.

I see it as an option when nothing else is available, say if someone is both unable to tolerate hormones and latex, or if someone’s in a place where contraceptives aren’t available, AND if they are willing to do the work and accept that it isn’t foolproof.

4. Maybe find some stories of Holocaust survivors who came to the U.S. by somehow doing something to get around rules, and how their families have contributed since then.
