It's a very common little trick to change the differential in a particularly difficult integral to simplify it to a form that is easier, then convert it back when convenient.
Happy to help if you need any more info though keep in mind I've been out of university for... A while!

How familiar are you with integration in general?
It's been a while, but the dx (or d whatever, it can be anything) indicates against what variable the integration is performed.
So if you had integral of u*sinx where u is a variable with dx, you're specifying that it's x that you're evaluating.
