I wish the preservation organizations had more of an in roads with realtors. My town and state both have tax credits available for purchase/preservation, but people rarely seem to know about them.

I was using a French language dictionary, but it appears that the term encompassed dozens of possible roles, including something akin to housekeeper in English.

It's interesting to note that entries from a French period dictionary focus largely on the power dynamic of the role (suggesting governance) rather than the typical connotations.

FamilySearch's AI is improving with time, but I've seen similar issues there with the Canadian records. HTR is just hard for software.

FamilySearch is always a great place to start! They've digitized a lot of Connecticut records.

The challenge really lies in getting across that the model that works for - say 1800-1810 - won't work for 1890, even if the record is the same and the boilerplate is similar. The language has evolved.
