ooooo have you looked at it under other lights? alexandrite is that wine-purple color under regular indoor lights but greenish under natural light, and fluoresces bright red under UV as well!!! apparently amethyst doesn't fluoresce, so the earrings could be amethyst

and here's what some polished corundum may look like! it looks like theres a huge potential variety in color and inclusions and such, and a lot of the listings for them are FAIRLY cheap because of that. I imagine you could find a very clear and elegant looking one, but set in a 10k band? doubtful

or maybe. it is ruby? it seems like corundum is a class of mineral, and ruby/sapphire is a distinction made mostly on the specimen's particular color or other qualities. anyway these refs are from a listing for similar looking raw corundum with the same gems under blacklight
