It's very old now, obviously, but A Little History of the World by E.H. Gombrich is still a brilliant history book for children

For smaller kids, I'd say Mommy? by Maurice Sendak and Matthew Reinhart – possibly the greatest pop-up book ever! And the Ahlbergs' classic Funnybones.
For older children, I'd suggest Penelope Lively's The Ghost of Thomas Kempe and Leon Garfield's Mr Corbett's Ghost.

You can't go wrong with any of them! But my favourites are the Wolves Chronicles, and particularly the ones starring Dido Twite. She's such a brilliant character. You?
