I have been anticipating Frank Martin and @gvonstoddard.bsky.social's new book for a while and they made a manga sized version just for me (don't question it).

Go back Love & Death on the Dark Side of the Moon!

More to come from me in 2026! I’ll be refocused and bring you MORE Spider-Squirrel & Trash Panda, MORE American Yakuza & more of the things you love from my cache of books.

I’ll be first focused on finishing up projects & delivering them to you, but more is coming!

So, what I’m really asking myself is, “should I get back to focusing MORE on my core while continuing to expand my catalog?"

I’m sitting on, “Yes,” but needed to kind of do that thing where you write all this shit out only to answer your own question. 😅

A great example of the latter would be either @stokesthewriter.bsky.social or @chrismoses.bsky.social each of whom have expansive catalogs showcasing their abilities to adapt to multiple genres & maintain the level of quality & success across every new venture.

Same w/ @patshand.bsky.social.

Where's this all going?

For one it’s me thinking out loud, wondering if I spend too much energy in the catalog & not enough on the core. For some, that might be fine as their brand is showcasing their own broad skills in which case building a catalog has bigger value, IMO.

What defines “successful” is probably its own thread… anyway. The point stands. Charlie focuses on his core, BUT he has a couple of adjacent as well as unrelated titles that do very well (The Game, HISMWTC) but his emphasis is the CORE.

…let’s talk about another example:
@charliestickney.bsky.social

Charlie has a core brand that has produced at least 8 main issues, two annuals, a couple of specials, and one spin-off (that I can recall). Charlie stuck to his core with White Ash and it has been very successful.

Anyway, they’re a model to study and emulate in your own way if you want to build a big brand. It always *starts* with having the right concept, sure, but it takes effort to elevate that concept into a brand. THAT is what separates @kamenamerica.bsky.social from most of us. But wait...

That’s where following the @kamenamerica.bsky.social brand helps us: they started with a core concept. A core product. She has a defined style. The creative team went all-in on marketing her & her adventures. No stones unturned.

✅social media
✅email newsletters
✅cross-promos
✅etc.

“I don’t wanna do marketing or brand-building!"
— Indiecomics Creators

Too late.

You’re doing it right now. Every creation, concept, social media post, every interaction (in-person, too!) is feeding into your brand. So, now you have to ask: WHAT do I WANT my brand to say?

So, yes I said, “brand.”

You have one whether you know it or not. Most of us just happen into a brand instead of building one with intention. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but it’s good to not only recognize what your’s is, but to start building it intentionally.

It’s easy for indiecomics creators to get caught up in wanting to build some gigantic catalog of books to appeal to a massive & wide audience, but at some point you’re stretching yourself too thin and diluting your core brand.

I’m sure someone read “brand” and twitched...
