Yeah I interviewed Sue Ann Carwell for my newsletter recently and got the same impression. It was all about impressing people in the local scene and responding to the local ecosystem.

This was back when local radio stations (and DJs) existed....

I read big chunks of Swensson's book when it came out. (And it did a lot to explain the plight of Mpls' Black community, and the conditions that led up to George Floyd's murder.) It's an amazing read.

The song being a local hit is the best explanation anyone's come up with!
