So that, even when I can explain relative differences in scale between things like total government expenditure and, say, benefit fraud, it doesn't necessarily reduce their insistence on the importance of the latter as an issue for Govt to address.

This this is of course partly a function of political discourse and how it's reported but also, more deeply, the way most people 'know' things about eg. the economy, the health service, public services, tax regimes, based entirely on their own, family or acquaintances' day to day experiences.

I constantly struggle to illustrate - in political conversations with friends and family - the relative financial scale of the things that have salience for them, day to day, compared with things which have salience at a policy level.
