I got to work with Louise Zingarelli at Character Builders making children's click and play CD ROM games. She had a GIFT for lighting and rendering. She came from animated film (Cool World, Lord of the Rings) and she had a way with color and human form I've never seen before or since. ai could NEVER
A storyboard panel from Cool World. A wildly colorful art deco poster inspired color pencil rendering of a crowd scene in a dance hall. The characters are all stylized into caricature shapes. Some appearing almost animalistic. Vivid greens, blues, and reds. Even the background is still colorful but everyone still pops. Everyone is underlit giving them an ethereal nighttime club vibe. This is WAY more rendering than storyboard panels are usually given. Another concept from Cool World by Louise Zingarelli. A white man in a cream colored suit suit complete with grey fedora holding a pistol, with a four armed "classic" old timey cartoon villain. Think "bluto meets Mickey Mouse". They have the white three fingered gloves on, a red with white polka dot bow tie on, snd. A torn suit jacket. They are black with a white face and a red nose, wearing a worn out frumpy fedora and smoking a cigar while holding a pistol. They are both wearing badges so are apparently an "odd couple" cartoon detectives. A pair of Cool World storyboards. Just black pencil but still rendered and shaded to the 9s. WAY more work than is typically done at the storyboard phase. The first panel is the main female character underlit looking off camera to the left, likely talking to the hard jawed male individual in the second panel who is also luciously underlit with a cigarette in his mouth, who is looking off screen to his right. A villainous henchman caricature of a man with a gigantic forehead that is more like an eight head is cackling in the background. A much older character study from the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings animated film, by Louise Zingarelli. Likely featuring Frodo and another heavier hobbit (maybe Samwise? I’m unfamiliar with this film version of L o t R). A black pencil drawing on yellow vellum (she LOVED vellum) they are lovingly rendered. An incredible attention to detail on fabrics and lighting. Even the hair on their legs (they're hobbits) is incredible.
