I think this is what's going on here, given that he's trying to co-opt your decision to leave by saying it was right for "both of us" like he was a negatively-affected party in the relationship.

And when it doesn't work to change your plans, then they abruptly pivot to "this thing I can't change is actually great for me!" as a way of keeping some control over the situation. Injuries suddenly heal. Long standing problems suddenly get resolved.
