On the occasion of the release of the book San Michele Cemetery Island for Damocle Edizioni a few years ago, I left a small frame with each protagonist’s portrait on their grave. A small gesture for people who loved #Venice, as I do.

The award was accepted by singer-songwriter and journalist Nabil Bey Salameh, co-founder of the Italian-Palestinian group Radiodervish, who performed on stage alongside the newly reformed @grupyorum.bsky.social #Turkey, to whom the prize is dedicated. Behind them was my portrait of Refaat.

A professor of literature and creative writing at the Islamic University of #Gaza, Alareer was among the founders of We Are Not Numbers, a project connecting young authors from the Gaza with international peers, promoting the written word as a tool of resistance and testimony.

Last night, on the Ariston stage during the 2025 Premio Tenco, the Yorum Award was presented in memory of Refaat Alareer, a Palestinian poet and activist killed in 2023 along with his brother, sister, and three children during an Israeli airstrike in northern occupied #Gaza.

In August 2023, poet Vyacheslav Malakhov was fined for a VK post “discrediting the army.” Arrested again in January 2024, he pled guilty and was sentenced to two years in prison in October. #Russia
