I think this was still labeled Nepenthes fusca ‘Sarawak’ when I got it. As of 2019 (if my memory serves me correctly), this plant has been formally recognized as Nepenthes dactylifera.

The bright red midribs are fantastic!

Primulina tabacum offers a splash of color in the winter. And I really need it. -7°F this morning. 🥶

I did a quick graphite study of an acorn this morning to figure out planning for a larger project I’m working on. I decided to write my own music (I need the practice—it has been a while). Couldn’t find a good electronic cornett, so first bassoon got the melody. 😏

The GEP Pathways Program taught me basic genomics, how to use databases like genome browsers, blast, and flybase, and how to do rigorous comparisons and annotations. It's a fantastic program and worth the attention and support. Check it out! 🤩
In 2005, a small team of researchers asked:
What if undergrads didn’t just learn genomics, but contributed to real discoveries?

That question launched the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP).

Myrmephytum selebicum, one of many Rubiaceous (belonging to the coffee/madder family) ant-hosting plants, produces icy blue flowers that develop into orange berries. The seeds are easy to germinate on long-fiber sphagnum, and ants are not necessary for successful growth.

The natural distribution of #Utricularia livida is a bit perplexing. It includes tropical and Southern Africa, Madagascar, and Mexico.

#Nepenthes clipeata is a critically endangered species of tropical pitcher plant, characterized by peltate leaves. In mature specimens, the tendril, which joins the pitcher to the rest of the plant, is attached to the underside of the lamina, rather than at its apex.

#Pinguicula macrophylla flowered! This #butterwort produces a very tight winter rosette, however, the summer leaves are comparatively expansive (35-175 mm long and 25-70 mm wide; Lampard et al., 2016). I managed a couple photos of the glandular hairs, too! #CarnivorousPlant

#Pinguicula gigantea is a large #butterwort species that traps small flies in sticky mucilage, like fly paper. It is easy to maintain, but it requires R.O. or distilled water. As an added benefit (for insect control), this species is homophyllous; it retains its sticky leaves year round.

I planted a few #Dorstenia foetida seeds probably about half a decade ago. This is one of those individuals now.

I usually notice the smell before I find the flowers. Hoya lacunosa is incredibly fragrant, and it can be an easy and rewarding houseplant, too!

The Rudbeckias still offer a few patches of bright color despite the bitter cold. 🥶🌻

I’ve had this ant plant since 2019. It produces icy blue flowers periodically.

#Myrmecophytes live in close association with ant colonies, providing shelter (and sometimes food) in exchange for defense. See the enlarged stem (caudex) with channels running through it in the last picture. #AntPlants

#Alsobia dianthiflora grows well in similar conditions to African violets. It does not, however, flower as easily as African violets for me, so this is a real treat! 🌸

Its common name is Lace Flower, which requires no further explanation here.

#Maxillaria cocosoma flowered yesterday, and it appears there is another bud on the way! Like M. tenuifolia, this species’ flowers smell strongly of coconut. 🥥

This was the first COLD cold day and the woodland strawberries (Fragaria vesca) are still trying their best. They taste better (my opinion) in the fall when the daytime temps are a little cooler. We had about a month of very sweet fruit this year!
