I enjoy King and Roberts on robust SEs + Aronow's reply. I lean toward agreeing with Aronow but typically tell people to read both.

I remember being shocked when I first flipped through Mosteller and Tukey's 1977 textbook and saw them promoting cross-validation...I had, embarrassingly, assumed it was a recent development and invented by computer scientists...

I like to begin with probability theory and frequentist inference for population means, but I'm not sure about putting regression before causal inference. I also like @bstewart.bsky.social's practice of putting non-linear regression (with one covariate) *before* linear regression
