The Democrat was elected to her Arizona seat 49 days ago, but the speaker delayed her swearing-in as he kept the House out of session until after the Senate acted to end the government shutdown. The Land Is Our Community would make a valuable companion volume to Leopold’s writings in environmental ethics or philosophy classes. Perhaps the book’s most notable synthesis of materials is the way in which Leopold’s ideas are put in dialogue with more contemporary ecological research. The other stand-out portion of the book is the discussion of what community-based conservation could look like in practice when a plurality of interest groups is included in the decision-making process. There is no pat formula for success here, as anyone involved in such messy and sometimes fraught community efforts will know, but Millstein deftly draws out the most salient ideas—what she calls the eight subprinciples of Leopold’s ‘Principle of Integration of Land Uses’—that could facilitate long-term partnership and community land care.

Dartmouth has rejected Trump's compact. Here is the response from Dartmouth Courage, www.dartmouthcourage.com, a coalition of Dartmouth alumni.
We applaud President Beilock and the Dartmouth Board of Trustees for their decision to reject the Trump Administration’s proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” In doing so, Dartmouth joins MIT, Brown, Penn, USC, and UVA in refusing to compromise institutional independence in exchange for preferential federal funding. President Beilock made clear that “the involvement of the government through a compact—whether it is a Republican- or Democratic-led White House—is not the right way to focus America’s leading colleges and universities on their teaching and research mission.” This statement reflects a vital principle: No administration has the authority to demand political “compacts” that impose ideological compliance as a condition for federal research funding or academic legitimacy. This is not merely the rejection of a single proposal—it is a clear repudiation of the tactic itself. This decision is a milestone in an ongoing struggle to defend American universities from political interference. Dartmouth now has both an opportunity and an obligation to stand visibly and vocally for the principles to which President Beilock has said she is committed. While we commend Dartmouth’s rejection of the compact, we remain vigilant about what comes next. President Beilock stated she is “open to other ways to work with the federal government to enhance higher education.” But many of the compact’s proposals would weaken higher education, not improve it—and we are skeptical that this White House genuinely seeks to strengthen universities rather than control them. As Dartmouth Courage, we will continue to advocate for freedom of thought and expression, institutional autonomy, and the promotion of diversity in all its forms. The next Alumni Council meeting is November 13-15, and Dartmouth Courage will call upon our alumni representatives to stand with the more than 1300 alums and 569 faculty members who have spoken out to ensure that the Board of Trustees and…

I'm feeling humbled & grateful beyond words to read such a thoughtful & complimentary review of my book, _The Land Is Our Community: Aldo Leopold's Environmental Ethic for the New Millennium_ from someone whose work I deeply respect, Dr. Soazig Le Bihan. It's a dream review for me:
To conclude, Millstein presents a compelling case that Leopold’s land ethic, properly interpreted, offers “the environmental ethic of our time” (26). She demonstrates that her novel reading of the land ethic is exegetically accurate, consistent with current science, and pertinent to debates in the philosophy of ecology, environmental ethics, and conservation policy. Additionally, the book is highly accessible, engaging, and relatively concise. Overall, The Land is Our Community is an absolute tour de force.

Where the author shines is in the pulling together of Leopold’s philosophy and offering it up for our consideration in light of modern ecology. Here, Millstein gives us two pearls that we can take home: Leopoldian land health and what she calls “the argu- ment from consistency” (p. 122). By land health, the author argues that Leopold saw the overall vigor of the ecological communities reflected in their ability to self-renew—what we now call resilience. The argument from consistency is a bit more com- plex and rests upon the idea that we, humans, acknowl- edge a responsibility to one another because we are all part of the same society. But this is no less true when we consider our place in the natural world—we have obli- gations to the other members of our environmental community as well. Enter the land ethic.
