Which is why a higher limit would be defensible (but probably wouldn't raise enough to justify the admin)

Yeah it'll be people with children earning 106k stashing away loads
November 26, 2025 at 11:59 PM
And yes I too think that a cliff edge on childcare so you lose money if you go over 100k is bad, and again one of the reasons I support higher headline rates at all levels is to avoid the need to do weird distortionary shit

You can't put your entire tax policy in a tweet and a 2% across the board rate may well be what people meant (it's certainly what I meant) and you haven't addressed the main issue which is that the main reason to do income tax is to avoid doing harmful stuff like this

1. Our pension situation is so bad that anything that makes people save less is bad

2. I think they can stop you and I wouldn't be surprised if some do
November 26, 2025 at 11:56 PM
Indeed
November 26, 2025 at 11:51 PM
Well 1) you can just raise all the rates by 1% so the distribution stays the same and more importantly 2) no one wants broad bases tax rises for their own sake, it's because they raise money we can spend on public services without having to do weird distortionary stuff

If you earn 40k and make a £2400 contribution (£200 a month) you pay £32.

If you earn 60k and make a £2400 contribution you pay £8.
November 26, 2025 at 11:47 PM
What? People have been saying she should raise income tax precisely because it would take away the need to do weird distortionary stuff like this.
November 26, 2025 at 11:41 PM
Presumably they didn't do that because it wouldn't raise any money
November 26, 2025 at 11:36 PM
Absolutely, but why would you make it worse? It's hard enough as it is!
November 26, 2025 at 11:00 PM
I feel the same. A bunch of mat leave means my pension isn't where it should be. If I worked full time I'd be a high rate taxpayer but I do 80% and most of the childcare so I'm not. I've been trying to salt money away in the pension to catch up and this feels like a massive kick in the teeth

We haven't had a pensions minister who cared about pensions since Steve Webb and it really shows

Meant to say gender pension gap not pay gap here

Advance warning, I'm going to be incredibly boring on this topic so if you don't like pensions chat then this is not the account for you
November 26, 2025 at 10:32 PM
Also am I crazy to think the impact will be gendered? Women more likely to be basic rate taxpayers because of part time work? And massive gender pay gap. So it's a tax on women catching up on pension contributions after mat leave.
