And yes I too think that a cliff edge on childcare so you lose money if you go over 100k is bad, and again one of the reasons I support higher headline rates at all levels is to avoid the need to do weird distortionary shit

You can't put your entire tax policy in a tweet and a 2% across the board rate may well be what people meant (it's certainly what I meant) and you haven't addressed the main issue which is that the main reason to do income tax is to avoid doing harmful stuff like this

Well 1) you can just raise all the rates by 1% so the distribution stays the same and more importantly 2) no one wants broad bases tax rises for their own sake, it's because they raise money we can spend on public services without having to do weird distortionary stuff

I feel the same. A bunch of mat leave means my pension isn't where it should be. If I worked full time I'd be a high rate taxpayer but I do 80% and most of the childcare so I'm not. I've been trying to salt money away in the pension to catch up and this feels like a massive kick in the teeth

Also am I crazy to think the impact will be gendered? Women more likely to be basic rate taxpayers because of part time work? And massive gender pay gap. So it's a tax on women catching up on pension contributions after mat leave.
