Unremarkable dork and nature nerd. Avid reader, occasional writer, gobsmacked science fan. Terry Pratchett and Doctor Who are my jam. Inveterately curious. Progressive as hell and always willing to learn and do better.

Spouse: Why did you sleep on the sofa last night?

Me: Because of this.

This might be the prettiest wasp I’ve ever seen.

If my id skills are on track, this is a blue-winged wasp—a fitting name, as whenever it moved in the sun its wings were a brilliant, iridescent blue.

This baby was one of many pollinators on the late boneset that popped up in my yard this year.

Like many other moths, plume moths are nocturnal pollinators, feeding on nectar through the straw-like proboscis mouthpart. They can also use the proboscis as a “feeler” to find out what’s around them—especially during the day when their vision isn’t as sharp because of the light.

They get their name from their wings, because when they’re unfurled, their wings have deeply fringed lobes that make them look like feathers or plumes.

At rest, they curl their delicate wings tightly in a t-pose to protect them and to camouflage as a bit of dried plant to hide from predators.

This friend is a moth—a plume moth to be sort of exact. There are a lot of different species of plume moths and I do not have the expertise to tell them apart with any certainty. ANYWAY—onto some fun facts!

The other morning while getting my coffee, I spotted this little friend hanging out on one of our kitchen cabinets. I gently scooped it up in a jar and took it outside, where it decided to hang on my palm long enough for a little photoshoot.

Btw—I think this is a horned passalus beetle, aka a Bess beetle or patent leather beetle. They eat dead or decaying wood, so I’m guessing junior here saw the mulch bag as a jackpot of a dinner, then couldn’t find its way back out. #beetles #hornedpassalus #insects #entomology #backyard

For some reason (I know all the reasons), this quote keeps circling in my head. As a collective, we’re encouraged to treat other living beings as things. And it’s beginning to rot a lot of souls. Kindness and empathy are radical, rebellious notions in this ethos. Be radical.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility, all! My nonbinary 12yo came out as such when they were 8. Every day since I’ve been lucky as hell to witness and support their ongoing journey to be themselves unapologetically and earnestly each day.

Welp. Looks like we’ll be taking this one to the vet tomorrow because she galloped joyfully from the kitchen into the family room and right as she tried to jump, she slipped on the hardwood and instead bodily faceplanted into the wooden bottom part of the sofa where the hide-a-bed is.

PSA: Folks get your mammos grammed!

I just got my boobs smashed in a machine to see if there is anything there that shouldn’t be. Get yours done, too! It’s fun!

Also, I was ready for this appointment 45 minutes early and still managed to be 10 minutes late because time makes no sense to me.

I was digging through a pile of papers to clear out and came across this original character, drawn by Bean. No idea when this was drawn, but based on the style, Bean was probably 10.

A dragon named Ghostie sniffing a flower. This is definitely a keeper. 🥹
