Has Lisbon being doing some massive land reclamation in between Cascais and Cape Espichel? And the opposite in Galicia: there must have been like a cataclysmic earthquake to open such a big bay where the Ría de Arousa is supposed to be.

Coromines proposed that (along with Sicilian ‘galiggi’) they came from Ar. خليج but, every time you post about the aflāy, I always think about ‘galacho’ with the not uncommon f > g of Mozarabic/Aragonese of the Iberian System.

I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but Aragonese ‘galacho’ and Valencian ‘galatxo/galarxo’ are applied to any excavated stream – both natural and man-made – that is intermitently dry – like old river and creek paths that are only filled seasonally, or small irrigation canals.
