Utopias in fiction often do fall apart, though. It's sort of the nature of a utopia that it can't be long sustained.

I think the stories don't present utopias, exactly, if a utopia is a world where everything is organized perfectly for everyone's needs and there's no suffering. OTOH, I guess they're utopian in the sense that they show people working hopefully on environmental challenges.

The solarpunk movement might be a counter to your argument. I've been teaching a collection called SOLARPUNK SUMMERS, edited by Sarena Ullibari, that includes futurist stories that take an optimistic view of humans' ability to adapt to environmental changes, and they still use conflict and tension.

I agree. Immigrants in general so often seem to be the ones helping out in a situation. But even if they were terrible people, it's still wrong.
