I want to contextualize the flu situation right now in #Colorado:

Less than 20 weeks have ever recorded more people hospitalized for Flu in the state than last week, going back as far as 2014. (Most were last year, the worst flu year ever)

AND Last Weeks total (334) is still incomplete data!

Wastewater trends for COVID have really turned upward, with 14 of 21 utilities now increasing. Levels remain relatively low.

Flu in wastewater is being detected in 20 of 21 utilities.
Levels in wastewater are not keeping up with the very high levels of hospitalizations.
December 18, 2025 at 3:14 AM
Pediatric cases are also very high:
Children's hospital reports over 500 positive tests for Flu A last week.
They also report that the flu being detected is H3N2 subclade K, which is causing severe illness in other countries, especially in the unvaccinated.
December 18, 2025 at 3:14 AM
Pediatric Flu Hospitalizations continue to be concerning.

71 hospitalizations this past week is 21% of all hospitalizations statewide.

Last year, pediatric hospitalizations only represented 16% of hospitalizations over the season; we are now at 85% of last year's peak.
December 18, 2025 at 3:14 AM
Hospital Admissions (comparing to initial #s for last week)

Covid: 52, down from 53 last week.
Flu: 334*, up from 244 last week
RSV: 31, up from 13.

*Highest level since late February. Flu A is dominating, with mostly H3N2 and more H1N1 than previous weeks.

COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update, 12/17/25

COVID has some rising indicators, but remains relatively low. RSV has begun rising.

Flu is the BIG story. Hospitalizations are now very HIGH, positivity & ED Visits are up, the first pediatric death in the state has been recorded.
December 18, 2025 at 3:14 AM
To Sum it all up?

There's a LOT of flu around and a lot of people are needing to go to the hospital.

Use layered protection strategies to avoid illness, including: hand washing, vaccines, air filtration, ventilation, & respirators like N95s to reduce your chance of catching the flu!
December 11, 2025 at 12:54 AM
Flu has risen statewide, with levels now above median in 9 of 21 utilities. Levels in Highland Ranch, Fort Collins, Metro-CC, and Aurora are particularly high for those utilities (Though Fort Collins does not have last year to compare to).
The statewide average is climbing FAST!
December 11, 2025 at 12:54 AM
Wastewater shows big jumps in COVID and Flu this week.

COVID trends have risen in response, with far fewer utilities in 'steady decrease'.

Flu SHOT up, and is now being detected in 12 of 21 utilities with levels now very well above normal.
December 11, 2025 at 12:54 AM
Hospital Admissions (comparing to initial #s for last week)

Covid: 53, same as last week.
Flu: 244* up from 182 last week
RSV: 13, up from 12.

*Highest level since early March. Flu A is dominating, with mostly H3N2 and more H1N1 than previous weeks.

COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update, 12/10/25

RSV remains relatively flat, while COVID has some rising indicators.

Flu continues to be the big story. Hospitalizations are way up, Wastewater is skyrocketing, Positivity and ED Visits are up too.
December 11, 2025 at 12:54 AM
To sum it all up? Flu is here and ahead of schedule.

Kids are overrepresented in those being hospitalized compared to last year.

COVID and RSV remain relatively low.
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
One concerning thing is that Flu detection in wastewater remains very low.
(averaging only 3000 copies/liter).

When hospitalizations were this high last year (between Dec 21 (162) and Dec 28 (353), Wastewater flu detections were MUCH higher (above 10000 copies/L)
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Flu is now being detected in 9 of our Wastewater utilities. Flu A is being found in 8 of the 9, with Boulder now switching to "persistent detection" and with H3 subtype Influenza A being detected in the sample.

Steamboat Springs is the only utility where Flu B is being detected.
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Wastewater shows COVID levels are climbing again, but remain relatively low. More utilities have decreasing trends than increasing.

Flu is now being detected in 9 of 21 utilities, particularly in the greater Denver area.

Caveat: ALL measurements are from before thanksgiving.
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Pediatric Influenza continues to be high, and children are overrepresented in those hospitalized.

47 of 182 this week's admissions were under age 18: still over 25%!

Last year's average was 16%.

Bug watch flu cases flattened, but that may be b/c clinics were closed for Thanksgiving
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Hospital Admissions (comparing to initial #s for last week)

Covid: 53, up from 43 last week.
Flu: 182* up from 116 last week
RSV: 12, down from 16.

*Highest level since early March. Flu A is dominating, with H3N2 representing almost all cases with an identified subtype
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update, 12/3/25*
*Holiday week

Flu continues to rise rapidly, RSV remains low, and Covid is rising a bit again.

Flu hospitalizations, ED visits & positivity continue to rise rapidly.

*Data likely delayed because of Thanksgiving
December 4, 2025 at 10:51 PM
Children's Hospital of Colorado has seen a rise in positive Flu samples, and their "Bug Watch" publication indicates an early flu season is possible.
November 6, 2025 at 1:51 AM
While Flu Levels in wastewater remain low, Flu A is being detected in 3 utilities: Boulder, South Platte, and Breckenridge.
November 6, 2025 at 1:51 AM
Wastewater continues to show that levels of viruses remain low. However, there *IS* a recent uptick in both COVID & Flu detections.

While COVID trends remain mostly decreasing (15 of 21), utilities are increasing in Southern Colorado and the Northern Front Range.
November 6, 2025 at 1:51 AM
COVID, Flu & RSV in Colorado update*, 11/5/25

All viruses remain low in wastewater, positivity and hospitalizations, but all Flu indicators are rising.

COVID & Flu wastewater levels tick up, though remain low.

Measles is no longer being found in Colorado wastewater.

To sum it all up?

COVID, Flu & RSV activity remains very low across the state, but there is a chance RSV may be kicking off soon.

Measles is being detected in wastewater in two cities, Colorado Springs and Steamboat Springs, with no reported cases at this time.
October 23, 2025 at 12:37 AM
The big story this week is Measles, which is being detected at TWO utilities: Steamboat Springs and Colorado Springs Las Vegas.

No additional Measles cases have been reported in the last few days.

The last reported exposures occurring in La Veta between 10/12 & 10/15.
October 23, 2025 at 12:37 AM
The COVID Wastewater continues to look great. Almost all utilities are in "steady decrease" and the average and median remain VERY low.

The COVID median and average are now as low as they were at their lowest levels in late spring.

Flu and RSV remain practically nonexistent in wastewater samples
