Another repeat blast from the past. Me as a toddler, finally growing some hair and wearing a white long-sleeved shirt with a red bow across the chest. I’m sitting on the floor in our old living room looking up at a wooden table on which is our Christmas tree adorned with lots of dripping silver tinsel. Maybe one reason that my mom would often call me “Cat,” I appear to be reaching up to grab at the decorations. (Apparently we often used to have small trees like this when I was very young - I have no memory of them but I do remember the wooden board with the tree stand bolted onto it that was in our garage forever!)

If you have to get out the ingredients anyway, why *wouldn’t* you fix yourself a Manhattan to sip while filling your “Perfect Manhattan Thumbprints”?

From back when I used to wear them regularly, my fancy red sparkly Christmas stilettos - crossed feet at the ankles beneath black velvet pant legs. OK I’m not entirely sure this was on or near Christmas, but it was in the winter and I’ve been missing both of these ladies so here you go! This is a picture of my mom (in a green plaid wool coat that I still own) holding my grey fluffy childhood dog next to a huge snowman that is taller than everyone in the picture. The snowman has on a jaunty hat over his arched black eyebrows, round brown (rock?) eyes, carrot nose and black smile. Around his neck is an orange-brown scarf and he has 4 black buttons down his front. Strangely, there seems to be a baseball bat leaning against him (probably my mom’s contribution). On the right, I’m standing in my red snow jacket with the white fur-rimmed hood up and matching red mittens. Behind me, with her gloved hands on my shoulders, is my “other mother,” Mrs. Witt (I wouldn’t call her Helen until I was well into my 30s) looking as coiffed and stylish as ever.

A curious cat, white and lynx-y brown with a perfectly pink diamond nose, peers in through the large window of my mother’s storm door. Outside, the cat (whose name, I think, was Christopher?) is on a wide beige driveway in front of a pink wooden bench and lush greenery. Inside, where Christopher longed to visit, is the edge of an upholstered chair on a wood floor and a red and tan woven entry mat. The cat (not ours) would come peek in while my mom was home in hospice care - and once, her caregiver accidentally held the door open a second too long and Christopher was able to say hello directly to my mom!
