I'm no Luddite - far from it - but the ways in which in this development has been spoken of seem blind to, or completely uninterested in, what cannot be machine read and searched for: the pounce, sweat marks, soot, or wax; the non-semantic yet semiotically rich substrate that OCR strips away.

Many call on researchers to behave differently. But researchers are dispersed across disciplines, institutions & countries. Let's face it, we are hard to coordinate.

So we call on the actors with real power:
Funders and institutions. 💪
They can set the policies and reshape incentives. 8/n

I don’t really listen to podcasts but I saw you at the Phil Mullen/ Afua Hirsch talk on Saturday looking very professional… gave you a little wave but I think you were very focused. Love that you’re sharing the writing journey - so valuable and not done enough!

I mean, this is in line with much radical feminist theory…
So Tate gets off the hook from being gay (heaven forbid!), but skewers himself by being accidentally feminist 🧐

This is easily resolved: you just need to have 2 bookmarks, because you’re reading 2 separate sequences

Because you read the report ☺️ You can shore up the base with a headline while still disowning it. Call me cynical, but things can work both ways.

I think it’s mainly that your university is happy to play to its conservative catholic base…

It took a Lithuanian friend to point out to me that the cosy way we use the word “soviet” to mean defiantly left wing here lands differently in the former soviet empire.
I was grateful for the observation, and thought you might be, too.
And also delighted to see another Galway hippy in the áras.

Another aspect is that because our political culture is hyper local, it’s already inherently, structurally conservative. The same conditions that make it hard for far right messers to gain political traction inhibit radical transformative political change. You’re always convincing the neighbours.
