The Locating Bench Marks, Preserving Heritage project has passed 2,000 documented bench mark site records across County Limerick. This is an extraordinary achievement in the timeframe and a clear reflection of the interest communities take in heritage @heritagecouncil.ie @unioflimerick.bsky.social

Last month, the Locating Bench Marks, Preserving Heritage team visited Poolbeg Lighthouse, where height measurement in Ireland began. The pivot bench mark (20.9 ft above sea level) aligns with the 1837 OS datum, used nationwide until replaced by Malin Head’s Portmore Pier in the late 20th century.

Currently working on a paper related to the portrayal of Ireland's Ordnance Survey in the nineteenth century news media. In today's @belfasttelegraph.co.uk we see the #GSNI advertising their summer field work, reminiscent of some OS entries almost 200 years ago

A very worn cut OS bench mark at White Rock, County Down, on the edge of Strangford Lough. Hardly visible in the pictures and would never be noticed by a passerby
